R2S Pro Staff Qualifies for California Bass Federation State Team

Havasu finish has Travis Huckaby moving through Federation brackets

Lake Havasu City, AZ, November 2, 2014 – Separated from the win by only 2 oz, River2Sea Pro Staff member Travis Huckaby fished his way to a 2nd place finish with 27.37 in the California Bass Federation (CBF) State Championship at Lake Havasu, securing a spot on the Federation’s State Team.

Having never dropped a line at Havasu, Huckaby prepped for the unknown fishery by spending pre practice time with his Navionics computer app, locating four key areas that he tested on his 2 1/2 practice days prior to the event. “My homework made it real easy,” said the Modesto, Calif. angler. “As soon as I put the boat on the water, I already knew where I was headed and three of the four areas that I had found on my app were holding fish.”

The conditions on the first day of the two-day event were conducive to the topwater bite that Huckaby had anticipated. After a run south, he concentrated his efforts on creek channels and points using a quick retrieve of a white River2Sea Rover 128 to entice all of his day one fish. “They were aggressively keying on shad,” he said. “The birds were diving, the stripers were boiling and I got in there with them. I caught a couple of stripers; but about my 4th cast, I got a 4 lb smallmouth. They were just all mixed together eating baitfish.”

Planning for the forecasted wind on day two paid off, when the gusts increased and Huckaby was ready with a secluded area that he had found during his off the water prep. Here, he put a Powder River2Sea 1/2 oz Bling spinnerbait to work on the main lake in grass and deeper tule edges, focusing on largemouth in 6 to 10 ft of water. “That is how I got my big 15 lb bag on day two,” he recalled.”They wanted the spinnerbait fast. I was burning it back to the boat.”

Going in to the tournament, Huckaby’s primary goal was to make the top-6, qualifying him to move to the next event as a boater. “I was sitting in 8th with about 12 lbs at the end of day one; so I knew I really had to catch ’em on day two to move up those two spots,” he said. “I started out day two with two good fish, but by 8 a.m. it just died. At noon, I had about a 15 minute window where I got four fish and that’s when I felt confident that I wouldn’t fall out of position. By 1:45 p.m., I got a 4 lb’r that increased my weight over day one’s limit and I knew I would move into the boater range.”

Competing in his rookie year in the CBF, Huckaby qualified for the year-end State Championship at Havasu by ranking 8th of 81 in the season’s Delta Division points race. As a top-12 finisher at Havasu, Huckaby will represent California at Clear Lake in Spring of 2015 in The Bass Federation (TBF) Regional Championship, battling five other State Teams for one of two spots at TBF National Championship slated for Spring 2016. A win there would earn Huckaby a berth in the 2016 Forrest Wood Cup and a year of the “Livin’ the Dream” package.
